How to Successfully Complete Your ZOE Blood Test
This guide will walk you through the steps for completing your ZOE blood test. Please read all instructions carefully before you begin.
Important Reminders:
Do not start this test until your ZOE app tells you to. Your app will specify the exact date and time for your blood test based on your start date.
The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes, so be prepared.
Ensure you complete the "Prepare for your blood test" task in the ZOE app before starting.
What's in Your Kit?
Lay out all the contents from your blood test kit:
Blood collection device
Optional heat pad
Alcohol swab
Test tube
Plaster
Prepaid sample return box
Before You Start:
Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Stay hydrated by drinking 2-3 glasses of water before the test11.
Have a timer and mirror ready.
Keep warm to promote blood flow.
Wear a top that allows easy access to your upper arm.
Position the collection device three finger widths down from your shoulder. Remove thick hair if necessary.
Does it Hurt?
You might experience some discomfort or soreness on your arm, but this is rare and usually goes away after a day. The worst part is often the anticipation; doing it without hesitation should make it smoother.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Start the "Do your blood test" task on the ZOE app and scan your blood test barcode when prompted.
Twist the cap off the test tube and set it aside.
Press the tube into the blood collection device until it's snug, with the fill lines facing outwards. Set the device aside.
Find a spot on your upper arm for the blood collection device. This should be 3 finger widths down from the top of your shoulder, in the center, on the opposite arm to your blood sugar sensor (if you're wearing one).
Increase blood flow to your arm by rubbing it with your hand, doing 10 arm rotations, or using the optional heat pack provided. If using the heat pack, rub it up and down your arm for 2 minutes.
Clean your upper arm with the alcohol swab and let it dry.
Remove the clear cover from the red button on the blood collection device. Be very careful not to press the button yet.
Hang your arm straight down by your side.
Stick the device onto your arm with the tube facing down. Press the edge of the device to ensure a strong seal.
Press the red button firmly for 4 seconds. You should hear a click and feel a slight pinch. This starts the blood collection. Only press the button once.
Start your timer and leave the device on your arm for 5 minutes.
Stay still with your arm down by your side. Watch the tube fill using a mirror if needed.
Note: Blood can take a few minutes to start flowing.
After 5 minutes, review "How much blood do I need to collect" below. Then, slowly peel the device off your arm from one side.
Note the time you finished collecting your blood sample as you'll need to log this in the app.
Gently pull the tube downwards and twist it slightly to remove it from the device.
Place the cap on the tube and press it down firmly. You should hear a "snap" sound once it's sealed.
Place a plaster over the collection site to stop any bleeding.
Wash your hands now that you've finished collecting your blood.
Enter the time you finished collecting your blood sample in the "Do your blood test" task on the ZOE app.
How much blood do I need to collect?
This is enough: A layer of blood covering the gel at the bottom of the tube.
If your blood reaches the top fill line in less than 5 minutes, you can remove the device early.
This is not enough:
If there is no blood in your tube, try pressing the button again for 4 seconds and waiting for 5 more minutes.
If you see blood, but not enough to cover the gel, please contact customer support.
Packaging and Returning Your Sample:
Put your sample tube inside the clear return bag. Do not remove the absorbent pad. Peel off the adhesive liner and seal your bag.
Put the clear return bag into the prepaid sample return box labelled "Blood test return box". Peel the adhesive backing off the box and seal it.
Follow the in-app instructions to return your sample.
Return your sample on the same day you collect it. If this isn't possible, return it on the next business day. Delays may affect the accuracy of your results.
Disposal of Equipment:
For disposing of the remaining equipment, follow local guidelines for biohazard material. You can find this information on your local authority's website.
Amazing! You are all done!
